The published museum schedule
As checked on 20 October 2026, the Vatican Museums publish Monday–Saturday opening from 08:00 to 20:00, with final entry at 18:00. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. A tour’s departure time and duration are separate from the venue’s opening hours.
Sunday needs a separate check
The museums normally close on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, subject to listed holiday exceptions. That last-Sunday schedule is 09:00–14:00, with final entry at 12:30 and free entry. Check the actual date on the official calendar; do not assume every last Sunday follows the standard arrangement.
Check closures close to travel
The official calendar includes public-holiday and temporary closures, including closures affecting only individual sections. Recheck it before reserving and again before the visit. A generally open museum does not guarantee that every room is accessible, and a third-party itinerary is not a guarantee against a venue change.
How long should you leave?
The selected guided formats last 2.5 hours and 3–3.5 hours respectively. The independent ticket is valid for one day but has a reserved entry time. None of these labels accounts for your entire door-to-door outing. Add the journey, check-in, security and whatever you plan after leaving.
Avoid an overfilled day
If you want to add the basilica or dome, leave a generous gap or choose another day. An early booking is useful if it fits your itinerary, but it does not promise empty galleries. Match your choice to your party’s energy and tolerance for standing rather than trying to maximise the number of timed bookings.
